  • The main difference between alcoholism (pathological alcohol dependence) and willful alcohol abuse is whether a person can stop drinking at will; if they cannot, then there is "impaired control" over their alcohol use, which is the primary indicator of an alcohol addiction.
  • People who suffer from emotional problems, such as anxiety or depression are reported to be at a particularly high risk for alcoholism, because alcohol may be used to self-medicate.
  • Nearly two-thirds of children 15 and younger who died in alcohol-related motor vehicle crashes were riding with the drinking driver, 20% of which were properly restrained at the time of the crash, and that restraint use decreased as the driver's blood alcohol concentration increased.
  • Once alcohol is in the stomach, it is absorbed directly into your blood stream through the tissue lining of the stomach and the small intestine; the rate of absorption is slowed down significantly by food.
